Water and Woods of the South
Water and Woods of the South captures the energy and serenity of the swamps of Georgia. The images control the chaos and unpredictability of nature by freeze-framing the details of its fleeting moments, creating an oasis of tranquility for the viewer to pause and appreciate its beauty. Large format allows the landscape’s fine details to be seen. Black-and-white values allow the viewer to explore the outdoors – the bark, branches, fungus, vegetation – without the distraction of color. Being monochromatic, each element – water, air, trees and land – is equal in visual weight and connected in harmony. The reflection of trees on the water engages the viewer to reflect on the grandeur of nature. Each negative is developed using the water where the image was made to bring both the light and water from the landscape directly into the print, connecting the experience of photographing with viewing the final product – and bringing the viewer closer to the scene.
